  • Interview with B.Parameswaran - 94th Rank - CSE 2007- 2008

    Biodata:

    Name : B.Parameswaran
    Native :
    Erode , Tamilnadu
college : BITS,Pilani (Electrical and Electronics engg)

During my 2nd yr in college,i decided for a career in civil
service as there is good oppurtunity to do socialwork. i was a little fearful of joinng or opening an NGO as there will be innumerable pointless questions from parents and relatives. Besides, I personally knew a few NGOs which are in financial constraints and unable to carry out their work as aid from government are held-up due to political reasons. the diversity of the job profile and
good social respect a civil servant enjoys has also attracted me to this career.
i didn't do any preparation during my yrs in BITS (except collecting details about good coaching centres available for my optional subjects psychology and philosophy) or the 1yr I worked in Flextronics software, Bangalore. I quit my job in May 2005 and first went to Jaipur for philosophy coaching. After 2 months there, i settled in Delhi for the next 2.5yrs initially for coaching and then self preparation. In my first attempt in May 2006 I cleared the preliminary exam but not so fortunate at the mains exam (October) In May 2007(2nd attempt) I cleared the preliminary and mains and got interview call. I obtained final rank of 94 to land up in IAS.
Subject selection: chose psychology and philosophy
    Because
  • I found them to be very interesting
  • Good coaching and material were available
Request to new aspirants - don't chose options just because its popular. Choose them only if the syllabi thoroughly interests u. generally less taken options like English lit, botany, zoology etc., have also been cracked by some selected candidates in last few yrs just like the 'popular' options because they liked their subjects.
Coaching - Psychology: Mukul Pathak , Delhi
Philosophy : Prof. Chandmal Sharma, Jaipur
GS: Vajiram and Ravi , Delhi ( I feel coaching for GS may not be needed except for the international issues in mains exam )

    Interview

I think the board looks for honesty objectivity empathy with deprived / vulnerable people (SC, ST, Minority, women, children) Qs asked to me:
    Chairperson (Parveen Talha)
What kind of government is present today in Bhutan?
    Is a constitution there?
Who is the head of government now?
Who is responsible for the introduction of democracy?
In which of our neighbourhood democracy is forced?
(Prizes/medals won: prizes in essay writing and elocution)
So in which classes you won these prizes?
    Define elocution?
Is this a better skill than debating? Because in debating one's
    Conviction comes out, isn't it?

    Member 1:
So you have worked in Bangalore. what is the earlier name of Bangalore ?
Why do you like the place?
What do you mean by pleasant, in what aspects it is pleasant?
Ok, tell me what are the advantages and disadvantages of civil society?
No, you are talking about society.
Now you are talking about civilised society. what0.. is the difference between Civil and civilised society?
What is equality? is absolute equality possible?
What are the parameters for inequality?

    Member 2:
    (Hobby: meditation and philosophical contemplation
    Playing badminton, volleyball and TT)
Why is the game volleyball called with that name?
Which other game can be called with the same name?
You don't have interest in music? (I said no)
Can you tell me something about the Beatles group?
    What is a symphony?
    What is western classical music?
What are Indian classical musical types?

    What is your blood group?
Suppose you are 0+ and your wife is 0- what problems will be
    encountered?
    Name a famous agricultural scientist?
    What is he now?
    What are his recommendations?
Which of his recommendation was not implemented?
Yes, but I'm asking of one particular important recommendation?

    Member 4:
    What is meditation?
How is it useful to you?
What are the types of meditation?
Why do you want to join civil service?
    Who is your inspiration?

Recently we hear lot on human rights.what is it,why has it become an issue now? (I talked of forced disappearance of people in J&K because of some suspicions of terrorist links but were not legally prosecuted or information on their whereabouts passed to famil members) but what about the security forces killed, innocent people fired upon are their rights not violated?
So, can we conclude that except in extreme cases, human rights of all should be protected?

Tips to candidates preparing for mains:

I have tried my best to tell u some points on what
I have done during my mains prep last time. Hope it will
Be useful .kindly ignore some points if they irrelevant or different from your approach.
    Make plans for 4 months
    1 month
    1 week
    Daily routine

And review progress every weekend and monthend.
  • Analyse last 10 yr Q paper. This is essential for both optional and traditional part of GS (history, geography, polity, economy, and statistics). Learning the required information is only half the part of exam. Practicing how to use it and where to use it is very important for scoring high marks. So doing this then and there after reading a chapter would be very useful.
  • After reading the chapters thoroughly, writing 1or 2 tests for each ( optionals 1 & 2 , GS) would help us to find lacunae in our presentation skills and improve it.This can be done with or without joining testseries(by personally meeting teachers who coached us). Joining test series may be helpful in analysing comprehensively all chapters. However care should be taken to ensure that portions are not rushed at the surface level just for the sake of the test.
  • As for daily preparation, be consistent and systematic. take a break after every 1.25 to 1.5 hrs. Reading continuously for 3/4 hrs generally decreases the reward for the time invested.
  • Before starting each session, put approx. 1/3rd of the time for what has been learnt in that subject the previous session. In psychology, this is called overlearning and it helps to quickly get back the points while writing a time-constrained 3hr mains exam.
  • Think actively.some techniques could be rehearsing mentally difficult/boring info in native language (tamil, telugu, hindi etc.,) try linking apparently unlinked topics/chapters compare and contrast things if possible use clues like acronyms, visualisation of abstract fact(as in history)
  • Discuss optional Q papers with candidates of your sincerity level 1 or 2 times a week. This may throw new insights on conceptsand comprehensive viewpoints on analytical Qs. But dont do beyond 2 times a week as the process may go mechanical. (Skip this if you have joined test series as the discussion would be done by the teacher himself/herself )
  • In optionals, add anecdotes, issues from paper/novels/other subjects read if appropriate.
  • prepare introduction for each chapter in optional if possible ( depends on the optional and nature of 60M Q asked)
  • donot read paper more than 1/2 hr everyday
  • try attempting essays from old Q paper not just ur 1st preference but 2nd and 3rd also. this practice will help to think and write on topics less familiar to us.
